Heritage Museums & Gardens will be filing an application with the Town of Sandwich to seek a special permit to operate its ropes challenge course, known as The Adventure Park at Heritage Museums & Gardens (the “Park”). Heritage’s special permit application will be heard by the Sandwich Zoning Board of Appeals.

The Park was the subject of litigation before it was closed in August, 2018 following the conclusion of a trial in Barnstable Superior Court. Heritage has decided against an appeal in this case.

“We would like to thank the community at large for being so very supportive of The Adventure Park. Heritage is proud to be based in Sandwich and to provide the Cape community with this one-of-a-kind experience, which is designed to bring the museum further into the 21st century in terms of outdoor discovery, education and learning,” said Anne Scott-Putney, President & CEO, Heritage Museums & Gardens. “We have seen the joy of exploration and the pride of those that have overcome obstacles while challenging themselves on the ropes courses. The Adventure Park is something we strongly believe in and we thank the community again for being so supportive of us and the experience.”

The Adventure Park at Heritage Museums & Gardens originally opened in June, 2014 and is situated on approximately four acres of land. Interpretive pathways are available to guide visitors through the forest. The varied terrain has allowed for a thorough discussion of Cape Cod’s unique ecology and has provided the public with a deeper appreciation of the Cape’s fragile ecosystem. Each course features approximately 12-14 elements, including tunnels, moving planks, zip lines, rope walks, and similar features. Safety tested and proven reliable, the courses are designed to teach children and families about environmental stewardship, community and individual responsibility for the environment through a physical, mental and emotional growth experience. Visitors have the option of experiencing five courses, each with differing degrees of challenge. Once above ground, visitors can partake of the tree canopy; be treated to unparalleled views of the forest; and savor a unique outdoor world of discovery.

“I can’t describe the joy that both my daughter and I felt after she first climbed The Adventure Park and how it changed her life and love for the outdoors,” says Bahman Azarm, Partner & CEO, Outdoor Ventures. “After hearing the same conversations from our many Heritage Adventure Park customers, both local and visitors, we earnestly hope to be re-permitted to bring this outdoor award-winning activity back to the community.”

Heritage will be inviting neighbors to a meeting to share its plans, and looks forward to submitting the special permit application shortly thereafter.
