Through lectures, demonstrations, exercises, one-on-one critiques, and handouts, students will learn how to paint realistic ocean waves and gain the confidence to paint seascapes in unique and creative ways. Photo references will be provided. This is the perfect opportunity to practice oil painting techniques, but students may use other mediums such as acrylics and pastels. We will start by talking about the color mixing and color attributes that will enable us to capture the ocean’s hues. We will then learn about the construction or “anatomy” of a wave, analyzing its structure and gaining an understanding of it in 3D. The class will also include drawing and painting exercises intended to familiarize students with painting waves and foam with an emphasis on light, shadows, reflections, and refractions. Students will become familiar with various painting techniques in oil or acrylic as they develop their paintings. All are encouraged to bring seascapes paintings they’ve completed outside of class for a critique from the instructor.

This class meets in the Owl Hall located on the main level of the Education Wing.
