Join retired Saquatucket Harbor Master Tom Leach as he delivers an engaging talk on the history of lightships on Cape Cod!

Utilized in New England from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s, lightships were floating lighthouses, vessels stationed at angry shoals to warn passersby and assure them a safe passage. Crew on board these vessels, often stationed for weeks at a time, not only braved the most dangerous of conditions, but were quite often in danger of being rammed, sunk, or simply just lost at sea. The last of the lightships were phased out completely in 1985, replaced by large navigational buoys.

Mr. Leach’s talk coincides with our Lightships exhibit.
