Ellen Briggs will be speaking about historic preservation. She will discuss the importance of preserving and living among historic and preserved structures and settings. Briggs will also be discussing the newly founded group, Protect Our Past. The mission of Protect Our Past is to promote education and public awareness of the value of local architectural legacy; to preserve, protect and restore the visual quality and integrity of historic buildings, landscapes, and landmarks; to honor the values and traditions reflected in them, and thereby, to nurture cultural and societal connections to the past.

Born and raised in a pre-Revolutionary home, Ellen Briggs grew up living within the walls of history. During the summers, she lived in an iconic windmill built by her great-uncle, Herbert Briggs, in Chatham, MA. The groundwork for her passion for saving historic structures was laid during her childhood. Briggs’ advertising and media career took her to Oregon, Colorado, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington DC, and Istanbul.  Briggs is the author of Are Your Kids Running on Empty? She also created a company, Better Food Choices, and hosted The Family Food Experts radio shows. Ellen’s mother and father had retired to their Chatham home where Ellen visited whenever possible, eventually purchasing the home after her parents passed.  Last year she and her husband decided to make Chatham their permanent home. During this time Briggs and her husband decided to rescue the historic windmill her great-uncle, Herbert Briggs, had built by having it moved onto their property for restoration.  Now fully immersed in the process of saving historic properties, Briggs has launched the non-profit Protect Our Past.
