In the early 19th century, Wellfleet native Winslow Lewis wielded significant power in the U.S. Lighthouse Establishment. Neither an engineer nor scientist, Lewis was rather a contractor whose designs prioritized budget over function—with sometimes disastrous results. Join Curator Emily Sullivan to hear how the issues within the Lighthouse Establishment led to the U.S. Lighthouse Board, and the professionalization of the nation’s lighthouse service.
