By working with archival records at whaling museums, in libraries, from private archives and through interviews with people whose ancestors were whaling masters, Skip Finley has crafted stories from the lives of more than fifty black and mixed-race Native American whaling captains.

Discover what life was like for those leaders of color on the high seas, their struggles and successes against a backdrop of slavery and enormous hardships, in what was one of the first American industries to exhibit diversity.
