Four Wednesdays, beginning July 3 from 2:00pm-4:00pm, no class on 7/24 & 7/31

This foundation class will cure your fear of water and teach the techniques that will improve your confidence in defying gravity. Starting with flat and graded washes the class will be encouraged to play with color mixes and both real and abstract textures. Making sound choices and good decisions will add to the students confidence level and lead to interesting and unexpected results. Students will be encouraged to work from their own photographs and sketchbook drawings. The adventure begins July 3. This class meets in the Fresh Paint Studio located on the upper level of the Education Wing.

Materials
Suggested materials: sketch book, spiral bound, 6×9 or 8×10 foam core board at least 24×36 masking tape paper towels, plastic containers or bucket for water palette, John Pike or similar, with lid or cover soft pencil, kneaded eraser, sponges paper 140 lb Arches. Cold press 22×30 3 sheets brushes: good quality #10 round, 1′′ or 3/4′′. Sable or sabelline and any other brushes you may have Paint: Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Alizarin Crimson, Ultra Marine Blue, Cadmium Red Light, Cerulean Blue, Cadmium Orange, Magenta, Cobalt Blue

Julie Blanchard
Julie Blanchard graduated from Emmanuel College, Boston MA, as an art major in 1967 and began a 36 year career, teaching art in the Waltham Public Schools. She began working in a masters program in studio art and art history, receiving an MAT in Fine arts in 1984 from Assumption College in Worcester. In 1985 became the Director of Art for the Waltham Public Schools. Working in watercolor on the spot, outdoors, in every kind of weather became a regular part of the schedule. Using strong color and a variety of techniques to capture the mood and feeling of the day, Blanchard allows nature to take a hand in the completed work. Whether it is sand and bugs or ice crystals in winter she makes use of the environment to help capture the moment. Since retiring in 2003, she has traveled across the United States, driving and painting to Idaho in the summer of 2004. Then joining a group of traveling artists to paint in Ireland (2004), Italy (2005), the Greek Isles (2006) and Cornwall, England (2007).

Blanchard is juried artist member of the Cape Cod Art Association, the South Shore Art Center and regularly exhibits throughout New England. She is a Signature Member of the New England Watercolor Society and Associate Member of the National Watercolor Society. Her watercolor paintings are in private collections in Arizona, California, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Idaho, Texas, Missouri and Virginia.
