This course is designed for students interested in learning the methods, various techniques, and materials associated with watercolor. Each week will feature different aspects of this medium. Color theory and basic methods will be reviewed in the first class.

  • Paint:
  • Warm and cool of the basic primaries in Professional Grades. Instructor uses Winsor Newton
  • Winsor yellow or Lemon yellow
  • New Gamboge yellow
  • Winsor red
  • Permanent rose
  • Cerulean blue
  • Ultra-marine blue
  • Raw sienna
  • Paper:
  • Using the best materials is part of the successful journey in watercolor
  • Cold press 140lb weight- can be purchased as single sheets, or in blocks.
  • Other:
  • 2 clear containers for water
  • 3 brushes- (round #5 or #6, round #10 or #12, a 1″ flat)
  • Viva paper towels
  • Pencil
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Palette
  • notebook for class notes and sketching
  • Support for watercolor paper
  • Blue painter’s tape

Instructor Bio:
Karen Pinard has been seriously painting since moving to Cape Cod in 2005. Her medium of choice is works on paper that include watercolor and mono-types although many of her floral studies and abstracts are done with water mixable oils.

Karen achieved an Associate Masters in Ikebana studying in Japan for five years. She is an avid gardener with a small landscape consulting firm, Art of the Garden.
