Rose Dugdale was born into extreme wealth. She had an idyllic childhood in Devonshire, was presented to Elizabeth II at the court’s annual debutante ball and earned her PhD in economics from Oxford.  She also joined the IRA, spearheaded the first aerial terrorist attack in British history and pulled off the biggest art theft of her time.  The women who stole Vermeer’s Lady Writing a Letter with her Maid –and millions in prized paintings by masters like Goya, Gainsborough and Ruben–from the opulent Russborough House in Ireland in 1974 was a very unlikely suspect indeed. The audacious heist—and subsequent ransom note–spurred a nationwide hunt, Rose’s ultimate capture and the return of all nineteen priceless paintings from the boot of a car. It also intrigued author Anthony Amore who, as the Director of Security and Chief Investigator at the Isabella Steward Gardener Museum, knows a thing or two about stolen art. This is his third book about art and crime and the first deep dive into the peculiar life of this “fiery, bold, and brash” criminal legend who is still alive today. The story goes that the profile photo on her Facebook page was once the Russborough Vermeer.
