It is said that if the Tower of London’s ravens should ever leave, the Crown will fall and Britain with it. That puts more than a little pressure on the Ravenmaster which, surprisingly, is a serious title indeed.   After decades of serving the Queen, Yeoman Warder Christopher Skaife became caretaker of the infamous ravens. In The Ravenmaster, he lets us in on these unusual, brilliant and often misunderstood birds: their moods and habits, pecking order, social structure, and diet (raw meat soaked in blood from Smithfield Market).  Ravens hold grudges, play tricks, grieve loss, bond tightly, and have definite individual likes and dislikes. The Tower’s ravens have also had harrowing and humorous adventures. While the master has tried to let the “ravens be ravens,” they have developed a relationship that is rewarding to both …and the four million tourists who flock to the Tower every year.
