One hundred years ago in 1920 the British government introduced the “Government of Ireland Act”; an act that is known colloquially as “The Partition Act”.

It was introduced in the middle of the Irish War of Independence (1919 – 1921).

The Act provided for the establishment of a Parliament of Northern Ireland and a Parliament for Southern Ireland. A Council of Ireland was envisaged to co-ordinate matters of common concern to the two parliaments.

This was a British solution to a British problem and its effect was to divide Ireland in a way that led to a hundred years of war and conflict.

This course will examine the developments that led to the introduction of the 1920 Act and its legacy until it was repealed as part of the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement of 1998.

This class meets in the Photography & Digital Arts Studio on the lower level of the Education Wing.
