On our first day we will paint blocks in the Hensche tradition to learn to see simple shapes and different color in all light conditions.

On the second day we will paint the figure on the beach or “Mudheads.” This is the 120-year Hawthorne tradition of putting a figure on the beach in silhouette against the sun to see the head as a mass. Students will practice squinting and eliminating detail, light and dark values and warm and cool colors and applying it to painting the Cape Cod landscape. These are fundamentals of painting. They are tools to use for a lifetime of painting whether in the studio or out in nature.
