This class serves as an introduction to the paintings, teaching and techniques of Charles Hawthorne and will prepare students to begin painting plein air in the Impressionistic style.

We will view works from the PAAM collection, discuss painting terms such as value, light key, local color, masses and spots, give an overview of color theory and how it applies to painting the light of the Outer Cape, and experiment with mixing and applying oil paint. This class may be taken alone but is designed as a foundation class for Mary Giamarino’s plein air painting workshop.
