This course is for the beginner or the advanced beginner. Students will be asked to work from still life and from photographic reference of their choice. The goal is to understand how “to see” the world in a new way and learn to express that through the medium of oil painting. Sean will give individual instruction to you as he walks around to critique your work and give individual attention.

Materials-
The class will start with a basic palette to help you understand color mixing. As we progress you may add to your palette. Note: It is important to have your photographic reference for the first class, so we can talk about how you will use that reference and/or if you may need additional photo reference to help your work.

Oil paints: White, black, ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow medium, cadmium or crimson red medium, emerald green, or hookers green, burnt sienna, burnt umber, and raw sienna.

Mediums: Odorless paint thinner, Optional – Liqiun medium. Bring a can/jar to transport used mediums.

Canvas: One small (8×10 or 9 x12) canvas for the first still life exercise. One medium size painting surfaces of your choice (16″x 20″ or any other medium size canvas).

Brushes for oils: #1 round, #3 or #4 round, and #6 or #8 flat.

Palette: plastic or aluminum tray, or tear off Paper palette pad.

Miscellaneous: Jar or can for your paint thinner, pencils, erasers, rags, paper (sketch pad), portfolio or box for transporting wet paintings.

Photograph: Bring in various quality photographs of subjects you wish to paint. Also you may bring in a picture of an artist you would like to create a study from.

Instructor Bio-
Sean Cassidy received an BFA at the School of Visual Arts in NYC and an MFA in visual printing from Central Michigan University. Since moving to Cape Cod, he is also teaching classes at Bridgewater State College and Quincy College.
