Join wallpaper specialist Robert M. Kelly as he delves into the fascinating world of historic wallpapers. Special emphasis will be given to the wallpaper located in the 1790 Dr. Francis Wicks House. This French wallpaper dates to c. 1800. Captain Nathaniel Eldred imported it for his West Falmouth house. It depicts 18th century France with classical statuary, buildings, and a Chinese bridge. The paper is rare and can only be found in two other museums including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Smithsonian. The source of the design is a series of prints from Philibert-Louis Debucourt’s “A Day in Paris at the End of the 18th Century and Beginning of the 19th Century.” A later owner of Captain Nathaniel Eldred’s home, Mrs. Carleton Bourne in 1948, donated it to the historical society. William Young from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, painstakingly installed it. The paper is fragile and has been conserved several times.
