The Historical Society of Old Yarmouth was founded in 1953 with the mission of preserving and developing community interest in the history of Yarmouth. Led by Caroline Siebens and Ann Maxtone-Graham the Society soon grew to more than 500 members who work to collect the objects and documents that convey Yarmouth’s past and promote the preservation of historical sites in the town. In 1958, Guido Perera, a descendant of early Yarmouth settler Anthony Thacher, gave the Society an historic family house on Yarmouth Port’s Common, as well as 50 acres of adjoining woodlands. This generous gift is now the Captain Bangs Hallet House Museum and the Nature Trails. The Museum, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is today the only furnished sea captain's home on Cape Cod regularly open to the public. WHERE WE ARE NOW: The Historical Society of Old Yarmouth continues to actively carry out the mission by collecting Yarmouth’s past and sharing that past with the local community as well as with visitors from around the world. The Society, led by a Board of Trustees, has two part-time staff members and a number of active and enthusiastic volunteers. Our operations include the Captain Bangs Hallet House Museum and 18th century kitchen, the Nature Trails, Kelley Chapel, the Turtle Wetu (a replica Wampanoag dwelling), and our administrative headquarters at the relocated and reconstructed Gorham Cobbler Shop (behind the Post Office on 6A). Our Archival Collections are now located there in a climate controlled archival storage facility. Each year we sponsor lectures, school programs, exhibitions, walking tours, concerts, holiday events, and other social and educational opportunities for the community. We also have an active publishing program designed to encourage historical scholarship about Yarmouth and make it available to all. WHERE WE'RE HEADED: Future plans for the Society include developing new space for permanent and changing exhibits and expanding our presence in the villages of South and West Yarmouth, both rich in historical importance. The Society is also working to better present and expand The Captains' Mile, the Captain Bangs Hallet House Museum and its surrounding historic sites, as well as the beautiful grounds and Nature Trails that contain so many outstanding botanical specimens. DIRECTIONS: To the Historical Society’s Administrative Office & Archives: Located in the old B.T. Gorham Cobbler’s Shop at 229 Old King's Highway (Route 6A) in Yarmouth Port, on the lane adjacent to and slightly behind the Yarmouth Port Post Office. It was also the site where the Mashpee Wampanoags signed what amounted to a Declaration of Independence. They wrote “all men are born free and equal” and declared that they would act against further encroachment by white settlers; 102 Wampanoag women and men, signed that Declaration of Independence in the school- house, which later led to some basic rights for the Wampanoags to govern themselves. The schoolmaster or schoolmarm will welcome you each Monday throughout the summer to tour through this important piece of Mashpee history. So, come and visit and go back to school in early Mashpee; don’t be late, however, as for every five minutes you are late, you have to stay after school one hour. Commissioned by George Washington and established in 1797 as the 20th light station in the United States, the original 45-foot tall wooden tower and keeper's dwelling were built more than 500 feet from the edge of a 125-foot-tall clay cliff. A new brick lighthouse was erected near the original tower in 1831. The present 66-foot-tall brick light tower, keeper's house, and generator shed replaced the previous structures in 1857. An enclosed walkway connects the tower and the one-and-one-half-story, L-shaped, Queen-Anne-style keeper's dwelling. Erosion of the steep cliff throughout the years brought the present light station around 100 feet from the cliff's edge by the early 1990s. Using funds raised by the Truro Historical Society combined with state and Federal grants, Highland Light Station was successfully moved 450 feet back to safer ground. After the 18-day move, the light was relit on November 3, 1996, and is an active aid to navigation. Today, the keeper's house features a gift shop and museum exhibits and a dedicated staff provide tours of the tower. Hours: Mon. Closed Tue. Closed Wed. Closed Thu. Closed Fri. Closed Sat. The building is also one of the oldest houses remaining on Cape Cod. A living museum, the library hosts exhibitions and exhibits year round, as well as guided tours and special events open to the public. Since Reverend Lothrop used the front room of the house for public worship, another distinction of the Sturgis Library is that it is the oldest structure still standing in America where religious services were regularly held. This room, now called “The Lothrop Room,” with its beamed ceiling and pumpkin-colored wide-board floors, retains the quintessential early character of authentic Cape Cod houses. Reverend Lothrop’s bible , with handwritten repairs to the pages, is on display in this room. On February 25, 1782, William Sturgis, a direct descendant of Reverend Lothrop, was born in this house. To help support the family after the death of his father, William went to sea at the age of 15. In 1810, he founded Bryant and Sturgis, clipper ship owners engaged in the Northwest and China Trades. In 1863, after a successful career, Captain Sturgis willed his former home, plus $15,000 in bonds, for the establishment of a village Library in the village of Barnstable. The Library opened in 1867 with 1,300 volumes, many of which came from Sturgis’ private library. Today, Sturgis Library is a national treasure. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Library is situated on the “ Old King’s Highway ,” recently named as “one of the ten most scenic byways in America.” The Library Collections have grown to over 65,000 volumes, including the Special Collections . These include the Cape Cod History Collection of books, manuscripts, photographs and microfilm, the most important collection of its kind in the United States; the Kittredge Maritime Collection, one of the finest maritime collections on the East Coast, notable for its concentration on Cape Cod sea captains and vessels; and the Lothrop Genealogy Collection, which is used by genealogists from all over the United States in examining their connections to Cape Cod History.
