Events Hydrangea Winter Protection Strategies Workshop We all love our Hydrangea macrophylla plants, but they are the least cold-hardy species and often bloom poorly following a harsh Cape Cod winter. During this small-group workshop session, Heritage’s Curator of Hydrangeas, Mal Condon, will provide information and demonstrate protection techniques to help your plants better endure the tough winters. Lots of useful winter protection components have become available over the last couple of years, and Mal is always evaluating these improved products and is eager to share his newest techniques and developments. He’ll demonstrate step-by-step procedures, display the tools and materials discussed, and share their sources. There will be plenty of ongoing time for questions and discussion and following the program, you’ll receive a PDF file via email containing presentation content for your reference. Advance registration is required, and we expect this popular program to sell out. This program will take place rain or shine. The program will be held fully indoors inside the Heald Center at the J.K. Lilly III Automobile Gallery. Mal Condon, Curator of Hydrangeas: A lifelong gardener, Mal is locally known as “The Hydrangea Guy” and has been collecting, propagating, and growing hydrangeas for nearly 50 years. He and his wife Mary Kay owned and operated Hydrangea Farm Nursery on Nantucket Island for many years. Early in 2014 they “retired” to Yarmouth Port on Cape Cod and continue to refine their significant garden which is open during the annual Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival. Mal joined Heritage in 2016, and as the “hydrangea whisperer” on the property, he’s especially devoted to the continuing expansion and evolution of the Hydrangea Display Garden and the North American Hydrangea Test Garden. Events Museum Lecture and Live Demonstration: Calligraphy, Community, and the Declarations of Falmouth Museum Lecture and Live Demonstration: Calligraphy, Community, and the Declarations of Falmouth In this colorful presentation, former White House chief calligrapher, Rick Paulus, takes you on a unique journey into the worlds of international diplomacy, White House entertaining and adventure on the high seas. Using his calligraphy as the backdrop, Rick shares personal vignettes from working at the highest levels of government as a calligrapher, calligraphy’s role in diplomacy, and many insights into the operations of the White House Social Office. He will be incorporating some of the Historical Society’s archive pieces to show how calligraphy was used in Falmouth for proclamations and special civic events. In 2006, Rick took a bold leap by leaving his coveted position in Washington to explore new adventures and art. It is here that Rick confronts his most difficult and most rewarding assignments; finding a voice for his work, merging life into art and art into life, and continuing to strive to achieve the technical skills required to speak fluently from the hand. Events Nyes & Neighbors: A Walk through North Falmouth Village For centuries, each Falmouth village has been a world unto itself, developing its own distinct character and a fierce sense of neighborhood pride. Venture with us into the quaint village of North Falmouth, shaped by the numerous Nye family from 1699 until the mid-20th century. We’ll take in the Congregational Church and its cemetery, then walk along Old Main Road, appreciating the beauty of its historic homes and sharing stories of their inhabitants. We’ll meet progenitor Benjamin Nye, tragic whaling captain John Galen Nye, shopkeeper Ferdinand Nye, and many more. Other residents, not of the Nye clan, also fell under North Falmouth’s spell—a diverse group that includes Senator Daniel Webster, stonemason Manuel Brazil, and hatmakers Susan and Cora Small. From traditional sheep farming to Prohibition and beyond, North Falmouth contains countless reminders of our past. The Historical Society is pleased to partner with the North Falmouth Village Association in sponsoring this walk. The Association’s headquarters, the Village Junction, will be open for walkers to visit. Please park at the North Falmouth Congregational Church on Old Main Road, North Falmouth Elementary School, or at the Shining Sea bike path parking lot. Events Kennedy’s Only Hero Joel Nelson is a British historian and author whose work focuses on political history and influential figures. He is a former Kennedy Scholar and has served as an assistant editor at Foreign Affairs. He studied at Oxford and Harvard Universities. His debut book, Kennedy’s Only Hero, highlights the impact of Winston Churchill on John F. Kennedy. The book examines the profound influence Winston Churchill had on John F. Kennedy, detailing how Kennedy’s early admiration for Churchill shaped his political philosophy, campaign strategies, and approach to international relations. The work draws on unpublished archival material to provide new insights into the relationship between these two historical figures. Although Kennedy’s Only Hero focuses on Churchill’s impact, the Kennedys themselves shared a special connection with Falmouth. JFK and Jacqueline Kennedy often visited The Antiquarian, an antique shop on Palmer Avenue, where they admired a distinctive pink West Falmouth granite stone. Jacqueline later recalled that stone when collaborating with architect John Carl Warnecke on the design of the president’s gravesite and eternal flame at Arlington National Cemetery. The family also maintained close ties with Falmouth interior designer Robert Luddington, who exchanged design sketches and handwritten correspondence with Jackie and Rose Kennedy for many years.
