The Sandwich native wrote 170 books and created Peter the Rabbit among so many other characters. At the Green Briar Nature Center, you will find a quiet corner of Cape Cod - a sanctuary of peace and beauty in all seasons. Located on the shores of Smiling Pool and adjacent to the famous Briar Patch of Thornton Burgess’s stories, Green Briar offers interpreted nature trails and a spectacular wild flower garden. Natural history programs for children and adults are offered year-round and include classes, field trips, guided walks, and workshops on the natural sciences. We also have our very popular nature-related birthday parties. Outreach programs to area schools and other institutions are also an important part of Green Briar’s services to the community. Members of the education staff visit schools, nursing homes and clubs offering slide presentations, lectures and classes. Adjacent to Green Briar is the 57-acre Briar Patch Conservation Area, home of Peter Rabbit and many of the other Thornton Burgess animal characters. Walking trails are open to the public. Green Briar is also the home of the Green Briar Jam Kitchen. Ever since Ida Putnam began the Jam Kitchen in 1903, visitors have come to Green Briar to savor the aromas of fresh fruits cooking on the stove or in the heat of the sun. Today the Jam Kitchen is a "living museum" where visitors may view the cooking process first-hand. The kitchen still operates using Ida’s recipes and preparing the jams, jellies, relishes and pickles the "old fashioned way" in the turn-of-the-century kitchen. Green Briar’s sun-cooked preserves are cooked slowly and gently in the oldest commercial solar-cooking operation in the country. They make mouth-watering toppings for ice cream or desserts. • Centers for Culture and History in Orleans | Cape Cod Museum Trail

Museum Directory Centers for Culture and History in Orleans Website: http://www.chocenters.org/ Address: P.O. Box 353, 3 River Rd, Orleans, Massachusetts 02653 Phone: 508-240-1329 Email: admin@orleanshs.org Orleans is the only place in the United States to have been attacked twice by foreign powers in different wars. During the War of 1812 the local militia repelled a British force at Rock Harbor and, in WWI, a German submarine attacked a tugboat and barges off Nauset Beach and fired upon the local U.S. Lifesaving Service facility there. More information about these events is included in revolving exhibits and on the CHO website. Founded in 1958 as the Orleans Historical Society, the CHO’s 1834 Meetinghouse (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) houses the Museum and is used for exhibits and cultural programs. This building, along with the adjacent 1939 Hurd Chapel, has been recently updated and is available for civic and private functions. The CHO has a collection of more than 6,000 items covering genealogical information, diaries, deeds, 19th and 20th century photos, artwork by local artists, special collections focusing on Orleans families and individuals, ships' logs, Native American artifacts, and other items relating to the history of Orleans and its citizens. One of its exhibits is of the lifesaving tradition on the Outer Cape. This legacy dates back almost 170 years before Orleans was incorporated as a separate municipality. During the winter of 1626-1627, the Sparrowhawk was wrecked off the shores of what became Orleans, and the first documented rescue mission was headed by none other than Governor William Bradford of Plymouth Colony. On February 18, 1952, during a raging nor’easter snowstorm, four Coast Guardsmen set out at night on this 36-foot boat to rescue crewmen on the tanker Pendleton that had broken apart. Despite all odds, the men managed to cross a notoriously dangerous shoal, find the Pendleton without a compass, and return with 32 survivors. For their bravery, the CG36500’s crew each received the Gold Life-Saving Medal in what is still called “the greatest small-boat rescue in Coast Guard history.” The story is retold in the best-selling book, The Finest Hours, and in a major motion picture by the same name. The boat is docked at Rock Harbor, Orleans, during the summer months for public viewing, with guided tours on weekends. She chose this location as his birthplace could be seen on the northeast side of the Manomet River; the house was destroyed during the digging of the canal in 1913. Jonathan was one of 10 children and at the age of 17 left home for New Bedford. He prospered and became the town’s most successful owner of whaling ships. In 1884 he was a state legislator, and when the western half of Sandwich petitioned the Commonwealth for separation as a town, he was helpful on their behalf. The leaders showed their appreciation by naming the new town in his honor. Thus in 1884 the newest town on Cape Cod came from the oldest town, Sandwich. Jonathan’s ancestor was the Rev. Richard Bourne, the first preacher to the Indians. The Jonathan Bourne Historical Center is a notable example of the skill of the Boston architect Henry Vaughn. The 1897 structure originally served as the Bourne Town Library and overlooks the Cape Cod Canal. It is a fine example of American Colonial English Renaissance) style featuring yellow tapestry brick and red slate roof construction along with large Palladian windows. A handsome stained glass window depicting “St. Michael and the Dragon” by Clayton & Bell of London, England graces the reading room. The Bourne Historical Society and two town committees, the Bourne Historical Commission and the Bourne Archives are housed in the Jonathan Bourne Historical Center. Hours: Mon. Closed Tue.
