WHAT TO EXPECT: Learn to make a laminated wood plate in this exciting class where each student is paired with an expert woodturner under the direction of Dave Arnone. You'll begin by selecting a variety of wood species, both exotic and local, that will be combined into a solid blank. The blank is then mounted on a wood lathe and shaped to create a variegated plate of your design.
Participants will learn about different wood species, how to prepare and laminate wood segments, as well as the fundamentals of woodturning, including safety, lathe components, and mounting and using turning tools. No woodturning or woodworking experience is required. All tools, materials, and safety equipment are provided.
EXTRAS: Each student will work on their own lathe and get one-on-one expert instruction.
DON'T FORGET: Please wear close-toed shoes and tie long hair back. This class is held in the Makerpace, located on the lower level of the Education Wing.
SAVE: Save $33 on this class by purchasing a membership for only $65 and get discounts on classes and events year-round at the Center.
INSTRUCTOR: Dave Arnone
With a background in Career and Technical Arts Instruction and Administration, I spent most of my career as a School Administrator and educational leadership consultant. While turning has been a hobby most of my life, retirement has allowed me the opportunity to begin focusing on developing my wood turning knowledge and skills. I enjoy the cognitive and technical aspects of turning and developing learning materials and opportunities to help others discover the joy of turning. My work includes bowls, lidded boxes, ornaments, and a variety of hollow forms and spindle-based pieces. I am a member of the American Association of Woodturners and locally, I serve on the Board of Directors for the Cod Woodturners Club and coordinate Club Membership, Instruction and Programing.
Currently, I serve as the Facilitator of the Cultural Center’s Makerspace program. In addition, I have been providing Woodturning Instruction at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod for six years and have had the pleasure of assisting many Adults and students discover a love for woodturning as a hobby and a means of creative expression. I have also had the pleasure of coordinating and curating woodturning/woodworking exhibits for the Center.
