Gorgeous Glass with Vangie: Beginner Lampworking, an Intro to Glass Bead Making
Sat, Oct 11, 12-3pm. Member $150, Not-Yet-Member $165
LENGTH: one 3-hour workshop
LEVEL: Beginner
WHAT TO EXPECT: Lampworking is the art of forming small glass objects from molten glass. In this exciting 3-hour introductory class, students will learn the fundamentals of lampworking, beginning with essential safety guidelines and torch set-up. You'll be introduced to lampworking tools and colorful glass rods, and guided through the process of melting glass to create your first small beads. These beads can be transformed into a unique pair of earrings or a pendant.
Students will also learn how to make stringers -- thin pulled rods of glass used to add surface decoration and fine detail to their beads.
No prior experience is necessary and all materials, equipment, and safety gear is provided.
EXTRAS: Every student will go home with a beautiful handmade piece of jewelry.
DON'T FORGET: Wear close-toed shoes and wear natural fibers (cotton or linen). This class is held in the Flameworks Studio on our Hyannis campus at 250 South St. Park in the big town lot adjacent to our campus.
SAVE: Save $15 on this class by purchasing a membership for only $65 and get discounts on classes and events year-round at the Center.
INSTRUCTOR: Vangie Collins: On a rainy Saturday, I saw what I thought was a craft fair. It turned out to be a bead show. I had no idea what I was in for. Various glass artists from all over the country were displaying their art. There, I purchased my first beads. I was hooked. I began exploring the world of lampwork glass beads and decided I had to learn how to create these amazing works of art. It has become my passion.
I took a beginner class and learned the basics. My husband (Jack) designed my first amateur studio. I spent hours practicing, and I admit I made lots of ugly, badly shaped amateur beads. Eventually, my skills developed and I asked an experienced well-known lampwork artist to critique my work. When she said “you have good hands,” I felt like I was floating on air, and I never looked back. I am at my happiest when sitting at my torch!
