- Mashpee Wampanoag Museum | Cape Cod Museum Trail
Museum Directory Website: https://mashpeewampanoagtribe-nsn.gov/museum Address: 414 Main St, Mashpee, Massachusetts 02649 Phone: 508-477-0208 Email: publicrelations@mwtribe-nsn.gov The museum building is one of the oldest remaining homesteads in Mashpee, built in 1793 by the great grandson of missionary Richard Bourne. Through the door of the Museum the history and culture of the Wampanoag from the Stone Age to the present is carefully detailed through a range of exhibits. First established under the guidance of the Mashpee Historical Commission, the Museum is the only one in existence devoted exclusively to Wampanoag history. The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Museum was a dream, then a passion of Amelia Peters Bingham, in which she saw the opportunity to highlight the rich indigenous culture and historic significance of the Town of Mashpee, on Cape Cod, known as the Land of the Wampanoag. The idea also coincided with the 100th anniversary of the 1870 incorporation of the Town of Mashpee. The Native Community embraced the concept of self-determination to show the world who we are and how we survived the conquest of America. The Bourne-Avant house situated on Snake Pond Road, also known as Main Street or Route 130, was chosen as an ideal historic structure to start this small museum. This building is one of the oldest remaining homesteads located near the historic center of town, adjacent to the Mashpee River and the Herring Run across from the Mill Pond and within close proximity to the Mashpee Wakeby Lake. It was originally built approximately 1793 by Sherjashub Bourne, great grandson of the missionary Richard Bourne. The Museum is the geographic core of the Mashpee Wampanoag people. Eighty-five percent of Wampanoag people live within 20 miles of the Museum. Hours: Mon. Closed Tue. Closed Wed. Closed Thu. Closed Fri. Closed Sat. Closed Sun. - French Cable Station Museum | Cape Cod Museum Trail
Museum Directory French Cable Station Museum Website: http://www.frenchcablestationmuseum.org/ Address: 41 South Orleans Rd, Orleans, Massachusetts 02653 Phone: 508- 240-1735 Email: FrenchCableStationMuseum@gmail.com The French Cable Station is a historic station on the southeast corner of Cove Rd. and MA 28 in Orleans, Massachusetts. It was built in 1891 by the French Cable Company, which was installing numerous cables in Cape Cod throughout the late-19th century. By 1898 the station was the terminus of a 3,200-mile long trans-Atlantic telegraph cable called "Le Direct." When France surrendered to Nazi Germany in 1940, it was taken over by the federal government for security reasons, but wasn't returned to the company until 1952. The company resumed operations until 1959. After being purchased by 10 prominent Orleans citizens in 1972, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places the same year. In 1927, the message that Charles Lindbergh had landed in Paris came through this station from Paris. It was then sent to the rest of the United States. The museum features four rooms. The superintendent’s office is essentially as it was through the years. Look around and you will see the walls are covered with a few photos and news articles of major events in the history of the station. Some of these were given to the museum by the Smithsonian Institute. By the superintendents desk is an early copy machine (non photographic). Every letter written was copied before being sent. The testing room contains equipment that was used to determine the location of a fault or break in the cable. Some of the equipment is still operational and can be demonstrated. Also in this room is one of the most unique instruments in the world. It is the Heurtley Magnifier used to amplify the weak signal coming from France. It was developed before there were vacuum tubes. There are only three in existence in the world today. The repair room held the equipment used to repair the cable and equipment. In this room are found samples of the early submarine telegraph cable and cables that have been under the sea for decades. On the walls are photos of a repair operation at sea. In a sealed glass cabinet in the hall are many interesting items including an original Tiffany and Co. Wooden box containing a sample of the 1858 cable. Cyrus Field had sold the cable to Tiffany immediately after the success of the first transatlantic cable in 1858. The operations room was the heart of the cable station. This was where the messages from France were received, recorded, and re-transmitted to rest of the country. Most of the equipment still functions and can be demonstrated. Each tour is about an hour with the last tour starting at 3:30 pm. Please email the museum if you would like to set up a private tour outside of our normal hours. Tours are free to all visitors. Donations are welcome to help defray the cost of running the museum. Hours: Mon. Closed Tue. Closed Wed. Closed Thu. Closed Fri. Closed Sat. Closed Sun. Closed 41 South Orleans Road, Orleans, MA, USA

The Historical Society of Old Yarmouth was founded in 1953 with the mission of preserving and developing community interest in the history of Yarmouth. Led by Caroline Siebens and Ann Maxtone-Graham the Society soon grew to more than 500 members who work to collect the objects and documents that convey Yarmouth’s past and promote the preservation of historical sites in the town. In 1958, Guido Perera, a descendant of early Yarmouth settler Anthony Thacher, gave the Society an historic family house on Yarmouth Port’s Common, as well as 50 acres of adjoining woodlands. This generous gift is now the Captain Bangs Hallet House Museum and the Nature Trails. The Museum, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is today the only furnished sea captain's home on Cape Cod regularly open to the public. WHERE WE ARE NOW: The Historical Society of Old Yarmouth continues to actively carry out the mission by collecting Yarmouth’s past and sharing that past with the local community as well as with visitors from around the world. The Society, led by a Board of Trustees, has two part-time staff members and a number of active and enthusiastic volunteers. Our operations include the Captain Bangs Hallet House Museum and 18th century kitchen, the Nature Trails, Kelley Chapel, the Turtle Wetu (a replica Wampanoag dwelling), and our administrative headquarters at the relocated and reconstructed Gorham Cobbler Shop (behind the Post Office on 6A). Our Archival Collections are now located there in a climate controlled archival storage facility. Each year we sponsor lectures, school programs, exhibitions, walking tours, concerts, holiday events, and other social and educational opportunities for the community. We also have an active publishing program designed to encourage historical scholarship about Yarmouth and make it available to all. WHERE WE'RE HEADED: Future plans for the Society include developing new space for permanent and changing exhibits and expanding our presence in the villages of South and West Yarmouth, both rich in historical importance. The Society is also working to better present and expand The Captains' Mile, the Captain Bangs Hallet House Museum and its surrounding historic sites, as well as the beautiful grounds and Nature Trails that contain so many outstanding botanical specimens.
