Become a member This Georgian-style house was built in West Barnstable c. 1780 by Winslow Crocker, a trader and land speculator. Winslow Crocker joined the American navy when the Revolutionary War began, and was serving on a privateer in 1777 when his ship was captured by the British. He was imprisoned in Nova Scotia, but was later exchanged for British prisoners and allowed to return home. He became a merchant and built this home for his family. There is speculation that he may have been a rum runner, a common occupation for those involved in trading at this time. Little is known about his later life because a courthouse fire destroyed many local records in the nineteenth century. When Crocker died in 1821, his two sons inherited the house. This initial configuration was modified and improved over the years from 1914 through World War I and beyond. Nantucket Historical Association At the Oldest House , Hawden House and Greater Light there are gardens that are open to the public during daylight hours along with admission being free to the interiors of all of these locations as well this summer. Outside Exhibits & Sculpture Gardens Cape Cod museums believe art should be accessible to all and many are able to accommodate that thought with outdoor exhibits and sculpture gardens. These outdoor exhibits and sculptures create opportunities for people to experience art at their convenience. At the Green Briar Nature Center, you will find a quiet corner of Cape Cod - a sanctuary of peace and beauty in all seasons. Located on the shores of Smiling Pool and adjacent to the famous Briar Patch of Thornton Burgess’s stories, Green Briar offers interpreted nature trails and a spectacular wild flower garden. Natural history programs for children and adults are offered year-round and include classes, field trips, guided walks, and workshops on the natural sciences. We also have our very popular nature-related birthday parties. Outreach programs to area schools and other institutions are also an important part of Green Briar’s services to the community. Members of the education staff visit schools, nursing homes and clubs offering slide presentations, lectures and classes. Adjacent to Green Briar is the 57-acre Briar Patch Conservation Area, home of Peter Rabbit and many of the other Thornton Burgess animal characters. Walking trails are open to the public. Green Briar is also the home of the Green Briar Jam Kitchen. Ever since Ida Putnam began the Jam Kitchen in 1903, visitors have come to Green Briar to savor the aromas of fresh fruits cooking on the stove or in the heat of the sun. Today the Jam Kitchen is a "living museum" where visitors may view the cooking process first-hand. The kitchen still operates using Ida’s recipes and preparing the jams, jellies, relishes and pickles the "old fashioned way" in the turn-of-the-century kitchen. Green Briar’s sun-cooked preserves are cooked slowly and gently in the oldest commercial solar-cooking operation in the country. They make mouth-watering toppings for ice cream or desserts. Built in 1791, the Judah Baker Windmill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is Yarmouth’s last-surviving windmill. Only a half-mile from Route 28, the windmill stands in a small park overlooking the Bass River and facing west toward Nantucket Sound. While you can see the windmill anytime, our dedicated volunteers offer free tours during the season. Accessibility: The park is flat with grass, a brick path, and a composite path (which can be slippery when wet). Inside the windmill, there are steps to the second level. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center offers excellent insight into the rich history, fascinating features, and vigilant operation of the Cape Cod Canal. The Museum collection reveals many important clues: reminders of the social, cultural and economic milestones of Wellfleet’s diverse and fascinating history. The core of the Wellfleet Historical Society and Museum lies in its collections which have been assembled over the last sixty years and housed in two adjacent buildings near the center of town. The collections are broad and eclectic and consist of objects, documents, letters, maps, photographs, and art. Of particular richness are materials that reflect Wellfleet’s history as a village largely dependent on the sea for its livelihood. There are models, photographs and paintings of dories, fishing schooners and “coasters,” the moderate size schooners that transported goods and people from Nova Scotia to Florida and beyond. Nautical items such as 18th and 19th century ships’ logs, quarterboards, brass sextants and box compasses illuminate Wellfleet’s seafaring history and noted ship captains. Further fleshing out the story of the town’s commercial prominence in fishing and maritime transport are containers for shipping oysters and mackerel, handwritten account books and receipts from the ships, commercial wharves and stores that reveal what was bought and sold, to whom and where. A large part of Sandwich history is involved with American glass production. This short presentation is culled from the collection of glass and historic images of the Museum and Historical Society. Sandwich owes its global reputation as a glass manufacturing town to Deming Jarves, who founded the Boston & Sandwich Glass Company in 1825. Its permanent exhibits and collections of nearly 5,000 pieces of glass combine classic and state-of-the-art technology glass. They include: Color & Chemistry; the Multi-Media Theater which illustrates what life was like in rural New England at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution and the Levine Lighting Gallery. Special exhibits are scheduled throughout the year. Each year, up to 56 live seals, 98 live dolphins, and 144 live sea turtles strand on our beaches, sick, injured, and in need of medical care. In 1995, a group of visionaries gathered to address the significant environmental need of a hospital to care for these stranded animals, many of whom are endangered and all of whom are federally-protected species. And thus, the National Marine Life Center was born. It is an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) marine animal hospital and science and education center. Our mission is to rehabilitate and release stranded marine mammals and sea turtles in order to advance science and education in marine wildlife health and conservation. In partnership with the Town of Dennis, we support and operate three town-owned museums: The Jericho Historical Center , housed in an 1801 full-cape farmhouse, contains 19th century furnishings, textiles, paintings and keepsakes. The Barn Museum on the site contains a general store, a salt works model, a carriage that raced at Riverside Trotting Park, farming tools & equipment from the 1800's, and a Cranberry exhibit which tells the story of cranberry cultivation, an industry that began in Dennis in 1816. The Josiah Dennis Manse , the 1689 home of the town’s first minister. Docents in period costume aid visitors through the air conditioned, barrier-free home, offering insight into life on Cape Cod in the 1700s. Also on this site is the recently renovated West Schoolhouse, built in 1745 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The West Dennis Graded School , the only one surviving of the town’s original five graded school buildings. It now houses a replica of an 1860’s schoolroom. The building is also home to the Dennis Maritime Museum, with displays related to the town’s extensive seagoing history, highlighting local sea captains, their ships, their tales and their navigational tools. At each museum, docents aid visitors through the museums and offer details about the what, why, and how of life at that time and place. The Society also operates: The Pauline Wixon Derick DHS Library on the 2nd floor of the West Dennis Library with the Society’s archives, maritime collections, local diaries, early deeds, photographs, and genealogical information. It is open year-round, but with limited open hours. ·The DHS website , which includes an online, searchable digital archive of historic information and photos related to Dennis history, as well as an online bookstore The Receiving Tomb in the Dennis Village Cemetery . Constructed in 1875, it temporarily housed the bodies of those who died during the winter months when the ground was too frozen to allow burial. Now, you can visit this free and self-guided educational museum when the "Open" flag hangs just outside the front doors to see and read the information on pre-twentieth century burial practices in Dennis. ·Occasional Cemetery Tours in the several Dennis village cemeteries, with a costumed docent regaling visitors with tales of the deceased.
