Museum Directory National Marine Life Center Website: http://nmlc.org/ Address: 120 Main Street, Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts 02532 Phone: 508-743-9888 Email: nmlc@nmlc.org Cape Cod is a stranding hot spot. Each year, up to 56 live seals, 98 live dolphins, and 144 live sea turtles strand on our beaches, sick, injured, and in need of medical care. In 1995, a group of visionaries gathered to address the significant environmental need of a hospital to care for these stranded animals, many of whom are endangered and all of whom are federally-protected species. And thus, the National Marine Life Center was born. It is an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) marine animal hospital and science and education center. Our mission is to rehabilitate and release stranded marine mammals and sea turtles in order to advance science and education in marine wildlife health and conservation. Mission Statement : The National Marine Life Center rehabilitates and releases stranded marine mammals and sea turtles in order to advance science and education in marine wildlife health and conservation. Vision Statement: The vision of the National Marine Life Center is to be a world leader in marine wildlife rehabilitation, conservation science, and STEM education. Values Statement : The Trustees, Staff, and Volunteers of the National Marine Life Center believe in humane care for stranded marine animals, thoughtful science that improves our understanding of wildlife health, and quality education programs that promote a conservation ethic. We carry out our work with respect for each other, our supporters, our partner organizations, our community, and the environment. The National Marine Life Center’s Marine Animal Discovery Center and Gift Shop is open from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day, 10-5 daily, then weekends through Columbus Day. We’re also open select days throughout the fall, winter, and spring (Open Houses, February and April School Vacation Weeks). An educational experience about helping sea life on Cape Cod, the Marine Animal Discovery Center features educational displays, specimens, and information about marine animals, strandings, rehabilitation, marine science, and ocean conservation. NMLC’s Gift Shop features a unique selection of local art, jewelry, educational toys & games, eco-friendly, and fair trade items with a marine theme. Shop for a good cause! - Chatham Windmill | Cape Cod Museum Trail
Museum Directory Chatham Windmill Website: https://www.chathamwindmill.com/ Address: 125 Shattuck Place, Chatham, Massachusetts 02633 Phone: (508) 945-5175 Email: ChathamWindmill@gmail.com The Chatham Windmill is an historic windmill at Chase Park, Shattuck Place in Chatham, Massachusetts. The mill, built in 1797 by Benjamin Godfrey, was first used to grind corn, and originally stood on Stage Harbor Road. It was moved to its present location in 1955, the year it was given to the town. The methods used in its construction suggest that the builder was from the southeast of England. Our millers and guides look forward to showing you the inner workings of this historic grist mill and are available to answer your questions. *Tours may be cancelled due to rain or severe weather conditions. (This is done to protect this centuries-old mill from water damage.) There were about a dozen windmills located in Chatham from the early 1700s through the 1800s, with about half that number operating at any one time. The windmill underwent an extensive restoration in 2010-12. Now the mill is fully functional and can grind grain into flour, just as it did in the 18th and 19th centuries. The mill was rededicated May 19, 2012 as part of Chatham's tercentennial celebration. It’s the only windmill on Cape Cod that on special "Grinding Days" is set in motion and grinds corn - just as it did in the 18th and 19th centuries. Click here to view the restoration. Admission is free - Donations to support the mill are always welcome! Hours: Mon. 11:00 AM - 03:00 PM Tue. Closed Wed. 11:00 AM - 03:00 PM Thu. Closed Fri. 11:00 AM - 03:00 PM Sat. Closed Sun. Museum Directory Crosby Mansion Website: https://www.crosbymansion.com/ Address: 163 Crosby Lane, Brewster, Massachusetts 02631 Phone: 508- 896-1744 Email: info@crosbymansion.com The Crosby mansion in Brewster is a monument to an earlier time, a time of opulence, grandeur and painstaking craftsmanship. Standing tall on a rise of land with sweeping views of Cape Cod bay, the three-story mansion is also a monument to romance. It is the legacy of a man who went west to make his fortune and returned to the cape with a bride 20 years his junior, for whom he built the mansion called Tawasentha. Albert Crosby was born in 1823 and raised in a modest cape house in Brewster that still stands where the mansion is, as he had the mansion, in effect, wrap around his old family homestead. Albert moved to Chicago and made his fortune producing distilled alcohol. He sold this to the army during the Civil War, and sales of this non-taxed medicinal alcohol made him a wealthy man. Albert spared no expense for the three story, 35 room home overlooking the Bay. Completed in 1888, the home was named “Tawasentha”, probably after Longfellow’s poem, “Song of Hiawatha”. It was built in the grand style of Chicago’s Gold Coast Mansions and featured a 60 foot viewing tower, 15 fireplaces with imported tile, hand carved mahogany and oak walls, a parlor fashioned after one at the Palace of Versailles, an entrance duplicating one at Buckingham Palace, a two-story billiard room, marble sinks and floors in the baths, and gas lighting and heating throughout. Because of its heightened construction, the Old Colony Railroad laid a side track to the site. The mansion was designed for the lavish entertaining his young wife, Matilda, loved. Legend has it that when her soirees became too much for him, Albert would slip away to the old homestead and sit peacefully in his favorite rocking chair. The mansion’s crowning glory was a two-story 75x50 foot art gallery filled with valuable paintings and statuary, including works by Childe Hassan, El Greco, Albert Bierstadt and other famous artists. After Albert’s death in 1906 at the age of 83, Matilda opened the art gallery to the public one day a week in summer, apparently in return for the town’s not raising her taxes. The gallery was legendary, and a number of famous people were said to have visited, including the Duke of Wales, Helen Keller and Samuel Clemens. We ask for a $5.00 donation, kids under 12 are free.
