In August of 1911, Vincent Peruggia stole the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci. Exactly what happened in the two years before its recovery is a mystery. Many replicas of the famous painting exist, and more than one historian has wondered if the one returned to the Louvre is a fake. Now, present-day art professor Luke Perrone digs for the truth behind his most famous ancestor—you guessed it–Peruggia. His search attracts an Interpol detective with something to prove and an unfamiliar but curiously helpful woman. Soon, Luke tumbles deep into the underbelly of the art world and forgery, a land of obsession and danger.  Oh what a web Jonathan Santlofer weaves in his newest novel: cunning characters, plots twists and unstoppable suspense.  But what else would you suspect from this writer and artist? His debut novel, “The Death Artist” was a bestseller and is currently in development at Fox. His fourth novel, “Anatomy of Fear” won the Nero Award for best crime novel of 2009. And, as an artist, he knows firsthand why people want to acquire priceless works of art. He has been making replications of famous paintings for wealthy clients for more than 20 years.
