Just when you think you know everything there is to know about our first president, along comes a book like George Washington, Entrepreneur. While Washington was indeed a gifted general and a political pragmatist, he was also a patron of inventors, inveterate tinkerer and heavyweight thinker. He was the first to breed horses with donkeys to produce the American mule. He grew countless varieties of trees on his estate and built a greenhouse full of exotic fruits, herbs, and plants there. Unlike his Virginia neighbors who remained wedded to tobacco, Washington planted seven types of wheat. And, he built a state-of-the-art mill to produce flour which he exported to Europe in sacks stamped “G. Washington”―one of the very first branded food products in America. Mount Vernon was also home to a distillery and became one of the largest American whiskey producers of the era.  This book is a refreshing look at a great man and a timely reminder of the role entrepreneurship played in this country’s history.
