This is an epic story of two nations, two allies with shared history.  It is also the story of a very uneven partnership.  It is the story of the United States and the Philippines. And it is an important story to tell.  Ever since US troops occupied the Philippines in 1898, generations of Filipinos have served in and alongside the US armed forces. As the US military expanded its presence in Asia–from the colonial-era Philippine Scouts to post-9/11 contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan–American forces have confronted their Pacific rivals from Philippine bases. This partnership created a gargantuan global military establishment; it also reshaped Philippine society and politics and brought thousands of Filipinos to America. Yet, while the nations have been crucial partners for over a century, it’s clear that “talk of brotherhood and shared service have hidden inequities and divergent ambitions.”
