This ensemble of five professional percussionists on xylophones, accompanied by four players on two marimbas, form a unique, one-of-a-kind band. Xylophonia celebrates the golden age of the xylophone from 1900 until 1930, when a popular new musical style (ragtime), and the xylophone came together. Ragtime, the new musical craze for dancing and an important precursor of jazz, found a perfect medium in the xylophone, an instrument that, with its very clear articulate sound, was also perfect for the early acoustic recording process. This fun, toe-tapping, uplifting, and very visual music appeals to audiences of all ages. Also included in the program is the music of other styles (African, Mexican/Guatemalan, jazz, classical) that help to tell the story of the band’s instruments. Complimentary refreshments.
