In a workshop environment, students will be painting from the model and integrating the figure within an interior space, real or imagined.

The environment in which the figure exists tells as much about our intentions for the painting as how we construct the figure itself. Do we want the confrontation of a shallow space, or the greater narrative potential of a deeper space, etc. We will analyze/discuss the images and processes of artists such as Matisse, Nicole Eisenman, Diebenkorn, Alice Neel, Freud, Henry Taylor, Gwen John, Hammershoi, and Marlene Dumas. Demos will be conducted in painting surface manipulation i.e. glazing, cold wax mediums. Models will be present during all sessions. Students are critiqued daily on an individual basis, therefore students may be engaged in different projects/ideas and with different processes/mediums. All are welcome, regardless of level of experience.
