This class is an exploration of surface design techniques for clay work. Whether you are a Hand Builder or Wheel Thrower, there are many exciting techniques for adding color and texture to your work. Our focus will be learning about and experimenting with several surface design methods, both traditional and nontraditional. These include sgraffito, mishima, water etching, slip trailing, making stamps, stenciling, and carving. Students do not need to have drawing skills. Ways of transferring imagery will be covered as well. Students need to have a basic knowledge of working in clay and will be responsible for making pieces of their own design. The instructor will assist as needed.
