Cape Cod historian James Coogan will present the lecture Slavery, Indenture, and Abolition on Cape Cod at the Atwood Museum on February 9. Join us while Coogan talks about how slavery was common on Cape Cod until the Revolutionary War. Indentured servants could also be found here. He will explain how indentured servitude was a common practice for those without means to come to America. He will then progress into the history of the Abolition Movement here on Cape Cod.

Jim Coogan was raised on Cape Cod in Brewster. After graduation from Boston College and military service, he returned to the Cape and began a career as a high school history teacher. Retiring in 1999 after almost 30 years in the classroom, Jim joined with Dennis author Jack Sheedy, in launching Harvest Home Books. He and Jack have written 12 books about Cape Cod, including four for children. A former Cape Cod Times columnist and a popular speaker on the subject of Cape Cod history, Jim lives in Sandwich, Massachusetts.
