This class meets online on Zoom beginning at 2pm on Tuesday, October 6. Your class confirmation email will contain the Zoom class link.

Let’s paint what happens after the sun goes down and the landscape is lit by the remnants of natural light and the onset of man-made light. Students will complete value sketches, create a notan to lay out the foundation of the nocturne, and plan the pops of color so there is a glow in the night. Lessons will include demos and exercises to develop value and color. In this online class, students will learn various techniques with soft pastel (no oil pastels) such as types of linear mark making, ways to achieve the look of blending, fun special effects. They will also learn ways to identify the value of a color and how to use this in a painting. Betsy Payne Cook will instruct, prepare students for independent engagement following the class, and provide feedback on student work. This class is for beginners, refreshers, and intermediate students.

MATERIALS
-Sanded pastel papers that are light values ( such as Art Specturm, UArt, Pastelmat and Pastel Premier). Canson or pastel paper for preliminary work.

-A selection of both hard and soft pastels. Have some intense colors both light and dark values, and a variety of dark muted colors.

-Paint to tone parts of the sanded surface. Black or dark colors: acrylic, ink, acrylic inks, gouache. You can also choose to use pastel and alcohol to tone.

-Brushes: for applying your ink or paint

-Drawing tools: sketchpad, drawing tools, black marker, ruler, kneaded eraser

-Time photos: Dusk is a great time to take photos. Look for scenes with contrast: the glow of lights, lit surfaces, images disappearing into the shadows, light reflection in water/puddles. I would suggest that you print on photo quality paper to ensure good reproduction. I can provide photos if needed.
