Drawing on works since his NYC SoHo exhibit, “On Paper,” Joe Fusaro presents collage and mixed-media works that utilize gesture and original photographs to place viewers in the midst of something recognizable and simultaneously fleeting. Fusaro tears and cuts into his photographs and handmade paper in order to present images we feel we recognize but can’t quite place… all the while biting our tongue to find the right words or simply keeping the memory to ourselves.

Joe Fusaro creates drawing, painting, collage and mixed-media works inspired by the language of the human figure- examining simple gestures in order to create surprising and simultaneously familiar images.

Fusaro’s paintings begin with initial drawings that transcribe a variety of gestures and get built through layers of marks and calligraphic lines. Mixed-media works, including collages, explore Fusaro’s own photographs, chance imagery and the compression of space in order to initiate new stories and trigger past memories.

Joe Fusaro is the Senior Education Advisor for Art21 in New York, Visual Arts Department Chair for the Nyack Public Schools, and an adjunct professor for New York University’s Department of Art and Art Professions.
